The Chapel Quotes

The pure gospel is being challenged by our culture in a way that can pervert it and give us and other people a false sense of the good news of Jesus. The identities that are given to us are from God. There is too much identity that we take upon ourselves that we put on our name tag from what other people say that we are. You are a saint not because of what you did but because of what God has done. A saving relationship with Jesus changes who you are and how you live. In Christ we receive a new identity and that identity begins to form our behavior and drives how we live our lives. We need to be thankful for what God has done through us and for us. The purpose of reading the Bible and knowing and studying it is to grow in our knowledge of God and to apply it to our lives in what we do. You will find your true identity and a spirit of thankfulness and a powerful prayer life when you realize it’s not about you but about bringing full glory to God.

Devotion 06/21/2026

Our Devotion, “The Real Thing” is by Mrs. Angela M. Knight, a licensed school teacher in Upland, Indiana, and a freelance writer for WBCL radio and Christian Book Previews.

One of the most beautiful of all the wildflowers that grows in Indiana is “Queen Anne’s Lace,” also known as “wild carrot.”  Not only does it have a lovely bloom, but it also has an edible root.  However, there is another plant that looks extremely similar to “Queen Anne’s Lace.”  It, too, has small, lovely white flowers, but if you examine it closely, you can see that its stem is more gnarled and its leaves are curled differently.

It is important to be able to distinguish this copycat plant from the real “Queen Anne’s Lace,” for the copycat is actually wild hemlock. Its flowers and leaves and roots are highly poisonous if ingested.

In a similar manner, it is important for us to be able to recognize false doctrine when we hear it. I John 4:6 warns us to “recognize the spirit of truth and not be deceived by the spirit of falsehood.”  The way to do this is to be continually in the Word of God. In doing so, we’ll never be “poisoned” by false teaching.

 Book Review 06/17/2026

This Book Review is by Margaret Frye, a Professional Writing Major at Taylor University.

TWEETABLE NIETZSCHE: *His Essential Ideas Revealed and Explained
By C. Ivan Spencer
Zondervan, PB, 192 pages
Suggested Audience: Young Adult/Adult

Spencer’s Tweetable Nietzsche offers a palatable introduction to Nietzsche’s influential ideas. By framing the book with “twitter versions” of Nietzsche’s ideas, the book is accessible to its intended audience: young adults. Spencer’s goal is not to give an extensive, in-depth look into Nietzsche’s philosophes, but he does hope readers will “begin to recognize his heavy influence on thinking in our times and assess his ideas when they reemerge.” Because he is addressing a young audience, Spencer provides a helpful glossary in the back of the book. He explains that Nietzsche communicated with a pungent style, well suited for twitter, but in changing Nietzsche’s thoughts to tweets, he does not wish to take them out of context.

Therefore, Spencer also includes a reference guide to all his “tweets.
Nietzsche’s influence on the world today is evident whether one agrees with his worldview or not. His philosophies and theories were studied by Hitler, Patton, and even Gandhi. Throughout life, Nietzsche explored four worldviews: Spencer navigates through Nietzsche’s views of Christianity (Lutheranism), naturalism, nihilism, and existentialism, explaining that the last three analyses formed Nietzsche’s worldview that had great impact and spurred a cultural shift. As a Christian, Spencer understands the importance of understanding Nietzsche’s views because of their impact on recent history and also today’s world.
